chore: upgrade to React Native 0.88 and Expo SDK 58 - #7852
Upgrades React Native 0.86.3 → 0.88.0, React 19.2.3 → 19.3.0 and Expo SDK 57 → 58. React Native 0.88 carries the iOS fix for layouts that keep their old size after a Dynamic Type change.
Versions: react-native and @react-native/* 0.88.0, @react-native/jest-preset 0.88.0 added, react/react-dom/react-test-renderer 19.3.0, @types/react ~19.3.0, @react-native-community/cli* 20.2.0 (template pin), every expo-*, @expo/ui, jest-expo and babel-preset-expo at the SDK 58 pins, @expo/fingerprint 0.21. @expo/dom-webview was held at 57.0.1 by a stale peer resolution in the lockfile; it now resolves to 58.0.2.
Kept: Jest 29, TypeScript 7.0.2, react-native-keyboard-controller 1.22.9 (already in expo.install.exclude).
Patches: @expo/ui, expo-font, expo-audio, expo-asset and expo-file-system re-cut for SDK 58 with no change in content. New: WatermelonDB's iOS JSI installer no longer references RCTCxxBridge (removed in 0.88); Bugsnag gets the empty proguard-rules.pro its Android build references.
Android: AGP 9.2.1 (from the React Native Gradle plugin), Gradle 9.4.1 with the matching wrapper jar and scripts, Kotlin 2.2.0, compileSdk and build tools 37, android.builtInKotlin=false and android.newDsl=false as in the 0.88 template, buildConfig enabled for library modules (AGP 9 turns it off and several libraries read BuildConfig), and DefaultReactNativeHost(this@MainApplication).
iOS: pods updated for 0.88 (ReactNativeDependencies, hermes-engine, React-Core-prebuilt).
Code: StatusBar drops translucent/backgroundColor, which 0.88 removed (they were already ignored with edge-to-edge on). A test mock follows cancelIdleCallback's new nullable handle type.
Jest: jest-expo 58 ships an environment built on Jest 30; under Jest 29 it loses the timer globals during unmount. The preset now uses React Native's own Jest 29 environment. Snapshots gain the svgVariables={null} prop from react-native-svg 15.16.
Fresh install on iOS and Android: select a server, log in, open a room, send a message.
iOS Dynamic Type: open a room with date separators, switch Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size to the largest accessibility size, return to the app, then set it back to the default and return again. Date separators and the header return to their normal size without reopening the room.
Two-factor login, message action sheet, external keyboard Tab focus, OAuth and conference call web views.
Deep links (cold and warm), the iOS Share extension, and a foreground push while the app is open.

Types of changes
Bugfix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
Improvement (non-breaking change which improves a current function)
New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
Documentation update (if none of the other choices apply)
InteractionManager is removed in React Native 0.87 and throws on access in 0.88. Since 0.80 runAfterInteractions behaves like setImmediate, so timing is unchanged.
createInteractionHandle/clearInteractionHandle are no-op stubs since RN 0.82 and InteractionManager is removed in RN 0.87, so react-native-modal would crash on open once the API is gone.
Re-cut the @expo/ui, expo-font, expo-audio, expo-asset and expo-file-system
patches for SDK 58. Patch WatermelonDB's iOS JSI installer off the removed
RCTCxxBridge and add the proguard rules file Bugsnag's Android build expects.
…napshots
jest-expo 58 ships a Jest 30 environment, which loses timer globals under
Jest 29. react-native-svg 15.16 adds the svgVariables prop to snapshots.
This change updates Expo and React Native dependencies and Android build tooling. It also revises Android and iOS project settings, app integration, test configuration, and native module patches.
Expo, React, React Native, and related tooling move to newer versions. Android build tools, compile SDK, Kotlin, and Gradle wrapper versions are updated. The Gradle launchers use -jar to start the wrapper. The Jest environment and idle-callback test mock are adjusted.
The Android host uses an explicitly qualified MainApplication reference. The status bar no longer receives translucent or transparent-background props. iOS resource paths and header search paths are updated.
Picker selection and native-list menu patches/@expo+ui+58.0.23.patch, app/containers/List/components/ListPicker.ios.tsx
The Expo UI patch changes picker selection binding and centralizes selection callback handling. The native-list picker uses a custom SwiftUI menu label.
Native module compatibility patches patches/*
Patches update WatermelonDB bridge types, Expo audio seeking, Expo File System client access, and Android font loading. A Bugsnag patch adds an empty ProGuard rules file.
On iOS, native-list picker rows may open a menu without selectable options, so users cannot change those settings. VoiceOver users may also be unable to open the menu. On older Android versions, bold or italic text may fall back to another font. Fix the picker label and the accessibility issue before merging.

On Android O or earlier, this branch stores the font only under Typeface.NORMAL and skips registerTypeface. React Native looks up bold and italic text under separate style entries. Those styles can therefore fall back to another font. Pass the loaded typeface to registerTypeface(fontFamilyName, typeface) before returning. (github.com)
Proposed fix
- ReactFontManager.getInstance().setTypeface(fontFamilyName, Typeface.NORMAL, typeface)- loadedFonts = getLoadedFonts().toMutableSet().apply { add(fontFamilyName) }.toList()+ registerTypeface(fontFamilyName, typeface)
return@AsyncFunction // Exit early if we successfully loaded the font

Dynamic Type (#7817): fixed. Repro, with the app kept running in the background:
In Settings, set Larger Text to the largest accessibility size.
Return to the app.
Set the text size back to the default in Settings.
Return to the app.
On the base branch, every time label stays cut off: "5:40 PI" in the room, "7:20…" and "Thurs…" in the rooms list. On this branch, every timestamp shows in full, both where the app resumes and after jumping to the latest messages. The base branch ran on a different simulator model (iPhone Duo) than this branch (iPhone 17).
Share extension: the app opens on the rooms list instead of the share view. The base branch does the same. In handleSelectServer, applyServerCertificate now runs before the same-host branch, so appStart(ROOT_INSIDE) lands after ROOT_SHARE_EXTENSION and overrides it. This came in with #7823, not with this upgrade; it needs its own fix.

Keep the interactive Menu accessible.
When VoiceOver reaches this row, accessibilityElement('ignore') hides the child Menu. The replacement HStack has a button trait but no menu action, so a VoiceOver user cannot open the picker. Apply the label and value to the interactive Menu instead of replacing it with a non-interactive accessibility element. Expo SDK 58 documents that 'ignore' hides child elements. (docs.expo.dev)
Based on learnings, a user-operable control needs widget-appropriate accessibility access.

Give the nested Picker a label.
When this row renders, the nested Picker has neither a label prop nor a label slot. The patched PickerView.makePicker() creates a SwiftUI picker only for one of those cases. The Menu therefore has no selectable options, and users cannot change this setting. Pass label={title} to the Picker. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
